[에너지신문] 07 March 2016 - According to the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI), coal consumption in South Korea could increase by 6.3% in 2016, from 133 Mt in 2015 to 140 Mt in 2016, as nine coal-fired power plants with a combined capacity of around 8 GW are due for commissioning during the year.

In January 2016, South Korea imported 10 Mt of coal (+5% compared to January 2015), including 7.7 Mt of steamed coal for power generation (+6%).

Coal already covers around 40% of the power generation in South Korea (42% in 2014). The country aims to cut its reliance on coal by developing its nuclear capacity (twelve projects under development including two 1,340 MW units under construction in Shin Kori) and has cancelled four coal-fired power plants. However, South Korea still plans to build 19 new coal-fired power plants by 2022 (15 are already under construction).
