[에너지신문] 17 March 2016 - South Africa's national power utility Eskom has submitted applications for nuclear installations to the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). The company aims to build and operate "multiple nuclear installations (power reactors) and associated auxiliary nuclear installations of a plant type and technology not yet identified". The company has identified two potential sites for new nuclear facilities, at Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape and Duynefontein in the Western Cape. The NNR will review the applications and decide whether the applications should be accepted for further technical assessments and public comment.
South Africa aims to build about 9.6 GW of new nuclear capacity (potential Thyspunt nuclear power plant) between 2023 and 2030, at an estimated cost of US$34bn-US$84bn. Following a call for tender, the construction of eight reactors was awarded to Rosatom (for an estimated cost of US$40bn-US$50bn) Eskom will run and manage the plant on completion.
