[에너지신문] 25 March 2016 -The National Energy Administration (NEA), China's energy regulator, has decided to stop the construction of coal-fired power plants in fifteen regions, where capacity is already in surplus, such as the major coal producing centers of Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Shanxi. China will also stop approving new projects in 13 provinces and regions until 2018. According to Greenpeace's estimates, the measures could stop up to 250 power projects with a cumulated capacity of 170 GW.

Stopping the construction of coal-fired power plants will help China tackle air pollution problems and meet its climate targets. The country aims to raise the share of non-fossil fuels in total primary consumption from 12% in 2015 to 15% by 2020.
